EL CAMINO, for video & ensemble (2005-07) 15', 30' or 50'

EL CAMINO is about the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela.
On stage a video is projected on the screen. The musicians, looking at the screen, improvise according to previous instructions on how to 'read' the images and set them into music. The video is actually the 'graphic-score' for the musicians.
The video shows in one single shot a sequence of legs at the main square in Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral will be only revealed at the end of the video when we see the entire square zoomed out and slowly tilting up ending in the clouds of the sky.
The ensemble plays with the direct sound from the square.
The sounds created by the musicians together make a unique combination for each pair of legs shown in the video, as a tangible imprint of individualities.
It is a game of awareness and reaction: observing the real world and making music from it.
There are three possibilities of duration:
15 minutes, 30 minutes and 50 minutes (full version).
All durations come from the same footage but cut from different moments.
The duration can be chosen according to the programming of the festival.

I would suggest to use the 30-minute version if the piece is presented alone.
In case it is combined with 'Counting Windows for TJ' we use the 15-minute version.

COUNTING WINDOWS FOR TOM JOHNSON (1999) video-version with ensemble (2008)
ca. 10'-15'

Sequences of images of windows from Amsterdam houses are shown on the video.
The musicians improvise rhythmic patterns from the windows.
This piece was premièred in 1999 to celebrate Tom Johnson's 60th birthday.
